As Hermes Trismegistus once said,

“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”

Aleah Koury‘s painting brings to mind the saying, as above, so below, and the duality of nature – human, or otherwise. For example, the color red symbolize both love and hate; and navy blue represents the mysterious depth of space and sea.

Mankind often struggles with an internal good versus evil war within. On the surface, actions may appear good, but evil intentions or thoughts may lurk below (like a wolf in sheep’s clothes).

Duality also appears in nature as the sun gives life, but, at the same time, has the power to scorch the earth.

Further exploration of this theme, brought me to Adobe Color CC Above and Below color palettes. Here’s what I found:
