Let’s examine the Photoshop Watercolor Filter, which reduces the detail of a photo, while adding a paint daub, watercolor effect.

Start with a photo: (photo by clickwowdesign)

Go to: Filter/Artistic/Watercolor
Brush Detail: 9
Shadow Intensity: 1

As seen here, the Watercolor Filter creates a dramatic effect.

Now, let’s take a look at the effect when the Brush Detail slider is set all the way to the right (high).
Brush Detail: 14
Shadow Intensity: 1
Texture: 3

Take a look at the effect when the Brush Detail slider is set all the way to the left (low).
Brush Detail: 1
Shadow Intensity: 1

The difference is very subtle. The less Brush Detail, the less the image looks like a photograph and looks more like a hand-drawn illustration. Find a setting to your liking and create a Halloween banner. Inspire your website or blog with the Watercolor Filter. Try blurring the image before applying the Watercolor Filter for a more flowing, painterly effect.
